About adult ADHD:

ADHD:

Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that usually first becomes apparent between the ages of 3 and 6. It is highly publicized as a disorder that is present during childhood. What is much less well known is that many children with ADHD will still have it as adults. Several studies done in recent years estimate that between 30 an 70% of children with ADHD continue to exhibit symptoms as adults.

There are three types of ADHD:

  • Predominantly Inattentive Type:

Often becomes easily distracted by irrelevant sights and sounds. May fail to pay attention to details and make careless mistakes. Experiences difficulty following instructions carefully and often loses or forgets things like tools needed for a task. Can be seen skipping from one uncompleted activity to another.

  • Predominantly Hyperactive/Impulsive Type:

Seem "on the go" or constantly in motion. May feel internally restless. May report needing to stay busy or needing to do several things at once.

  • Combined Type:

Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impusivity.

A correct diagnosis of ADHD can bring a sense of relief. Undiagnosed individuals often develop negative perceptions of themselves that may lead to low self-esteem in adulthood, difficulty in the workplace, and relational difficulties. With an accurate diagnosis, adults with ADHD can begin to understand the reason behind the everyday challenges they experience and begin to face them.

Various performance tests and rating scales are offered to evaluate the appropriateness of a diagnosis of ADHD and screen for other possible comorbidities to be considered.
